What is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous Earth (also known as DE, diatomite and Kieselghur) is the fossil remains of plankton that died in the oceans millions of years ago and sank to the bottom to form deposits. Chemically it is predominantly silica, one of the most abundant minerals on the upper crust of our planet, earth!
Use in D.E. filters
Some companies, such as Hayward, still manufacture D.E. filters to respond to the demands of some pool architects. However, once the best available filtration for pools, it is costly, messy, and maintenance-intensive.
Nowadays, since the introduction of high-performance zeolites, modern sand filters filled with Zelbrite are more efficient and practically maintenance free. A Zelbrite filling can last for 10 years or more.
